Crowns and Bridges
Show us that smile again!
Crowns and bridges are restorations that are cemented onto teeth or dental implants. Both crowns and most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, which you can take out and clean daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist.
Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function. A crown is often used to cover a large filling or a severely damaged or cracked tooth so it can withstand everyday wear and tear.
Dr. Girard makes crowns from ceramic (porcelain) or gold. Ceramic (porcelain) crowns are made to look like your natural tooth. Dr. Girard and the Oaklands Dental team will help you make the best choice for your mouth!
Dr. Girard may recommend a bridge if you are missing one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth can eventually cause remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
A dental bridge is often used to cover the space left by missing teeth. A bridge is cemented to natural teeth (or dental implants). It is one option for filling the gap created by a missing tooth, and this fixed prosthetic can improve your smile and restore function to your teeth.
